Nikolaus Grüner shows his tattoo. Where’s Elie’s?

By Carolyn Yeager

In this video,  Nikolaus or Miklos (Michael) Grüner is being interviewed by the Modesto (Calif.) Bee while the photographer films him pointing out the tattoo on his left arm.  This is shown in the very beginning of the video; right after that we see  the famous “Buchenwald Liberation” photograph we’ve become so familiar with, and 16-year-old Grüner is in the lower left hand corner. Is Elie in the photo? No.

In 2008, Grüner traveled to California from his home in Sweden. While there, this very important bit of video was produced but has not been given the attention it deserves. I wonder why. Notice I didn’t form that as a question since I think the answer is apparent:  If Grüner has a tattoo, why doesn’t Wiesel?

According to Elie Wiesel, he and his family were deported to Auschwitz in the same time period that Grüner and his family were–in May/June of 1944. They both tell a similar story of arrival at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the men being separated from the women whom they never saw again. After a period of adjustment, they were transferred to Monowitz-Buna where they lived and worked until January 1945, when both say they were transferred to Buchenwald. They also both say in their respective books that they were given a tattoo on their left forearm while at Birkenau – Wiesel the number A-7713 and Grüner A-11104.

Gruner’s tattoo looks like a real tattoo to me. It looks very similar to the one in this picture at right of Sam Rosenzweig’s arm, which I have posted previously and is the best example of an Auschwitz tattoo I have found. According to George Rosenthal, writing for the Jewish Virtual Library, and accepted by the USHMM, Sam’s tattoo represents the “regular” series of numbers used at Auschwitz from 1940, while the “A” series was first issued  in May 1944.

So we have evidence from Grüner and the photograph above of what Elie Wiesel should have on his arm, but doesn’t. There is no point in “Wiesel Believers” continuing to make excuses or look for reasons why their hero Elie won’t come clean about his bare arms. We know he has no tattoo where it is supposed to be … or anyplace! Just look at the top of this website. Or the photo belowfrom the 1996 documentary film “Elie Wiesel Goes Home.” We see his left arm in bright sunlight; clearly there is nothing on it. In the film we can see his right arm too, many times, which also has nothing on it. What more is there to be said? It’s a slam-dunk, and there is nary a word coming from the Wiesel camp about it. Isn’t it about time? Yes, but nothing happens unless people demand it.

Remember, on March 25, 2010 at the  University of Dayton, a student asked Wiesel if he still has his concentration camp number and if it serves as a reminder of those terrible experiences.  “I don’t need that to remember, I think about my past every day,” he responded. “But I still have it on my arm – A7713.

Robert A Brown, President of Boston University (Wiesel’s employer) wrote to me on Sept. 27, 2010, after receiving all this evidence,  “I have no doubt that he is a survivor of the Holocaust and …  a man of integrity and would not stoop to fabrication.

What do you think?

It seems to me Robert A. Brown is being a little careful with his words.
    A. Elie Wiesel is certainly under any definition a survivor of the Holocaust.
    B. If he “broke into Buchenwald” in May/June 1945, then the most likely reason he was in some kind of forced labor for the Germans within the region and ergo almost certainly transited through Auschwitz like his two sisters.

I have been following the discussion on CODOH with interest. It would be interesting to see how the episode of Anton and Rosa Stein is dealt with.

Grey, I had the same thought as I recopied President Brown’s words. “A survivor of the Holocaust” is all he said, and then gave Wiesel a character reference (heh heh). Well, it still amounts to backing him, but Brown has no choice. It’s not the president of a university that has any say in matters of hiring, and Jews run Boston Univ.

Being turned into “forced labor” is a real possibility, but the fact remains: they don’t say that.

Why do you say Stein’s name is Anton? Are those two mentioned somewhere else?

If you search for Rosa Stein; Location Belgium and Anton Stein; Location Belgium at Yad Vashem the entries come up. The appear on a deportation list to Auschwitz:
    “Date of deportation 15/09/1942
Details of transport Transport X from MALINES,CASERNE DOSSIN,Camp,BELGIUM to AUSCHWITZ BIRKENAU,Camp on 15/09/1942
Prisoner Nr. in Transport 71” and Nr. 70 for Anton. Quite why Anton Stein seems to have forgotten his wife was sitting next to him in the deportation train is left unexplained in Night. So it will be interesting to find out the yiddish version says.

There are also pages of testimony by their two children and also by a brother – search for combinations of Anton/Asher and Rosa/Reizl

    Grey,

What do you mean by “testimony by their two children? A son Marcel filled out forms for Anton and Rosa in 2006. Kind of late? A girl named Rachel Stein (born in Antwerp Sept. 1933) was on the deportation list for Aug. 25, 1942, number 249 in transport V. Rosa and Anton were in transport X. If she was their 9 year old daughter, it’s hard to believe she was sent earlier and separate from them. If Marcel were her brother, what is his story and why didn’t he make out a YV form for his sister, too? There are no dates of death on any of these — they are assumed.

Rosa/Reizl’s brother Avraham filled out the YV form probably in the 1950’s; it’s the older, original form design. He has his sister’s birth date as 1912, making her only 3 years younger than her husband (born 1909). Her son has it as 1914. Since she disappeared in 1942 at age 30 or 32, he would have been young. Her brother would be more knowledgeable about her age.

Wiesel writes on page 52: “He (Stein) said, ‘I was deported in 1942. I heard that a transport had come in from your region, and I came to find you. I thought perhaps you might have news of Reizel and my little boys. They stayed behind in Antwerp …’ ” According the the transport ‘record’, Mr. and Mrs. Stein were deported together. I guess that rules out Rachel Stein as a part of that family. But where is the other son? He survived too?

Further on, page 53, Wiesel writes: “(Stein) came to us one evening , his face radiant. ‘A transport’s just come in from Antwerp. I’m going to meet them tomorrow. They’ll be sure to have news.’ He went off. We were not to see him again. He had had news. Real news.” We are led to believe that Stein learns his wife and sons are wiped out. He also succumbs then. But that is not true, as we know at least son Marcel survived. Maybe they all did.

This may be your shortest blog.

It may be the most devastating as well.

Has the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” ever been more accurate or more damning for this goniff ?

Wouldn’t it be worth creating a flier version to be left wherever the fanciful clown known as “Elie Wiesel” peddles his hateful soliloquy.

    On January 10, 2012 at 9:36 am

Yes, it is devastating. However, there are those who profess to be revisionists who are against what I’m doing here. They’re looking for a “smoking gun.” If ever there were a “smoking gun” for Elie Wiesel’s authenticity, this is it. If there is an explanation, it should come from Elie Wiesel, not from me or you or anyone else.

I will make a flier version and put it in the “Downloads” where anyone can download it and print them up. But what is lacking is the will to do anything physically. People in general have become “internet lazy.”

The “crimes” of exposing one fraud (a Nobel Prize winner at that) and exposing the Holocaust mythology are not differentiated between.

I’m “Internet lazy.” It not only saves time, but also it saves being beaten up.

I agree that he should have one, according to the logic of the whole story, but I am still looking for an answer to the questions I raised here:

    http://www.cwporter.com/tattoo1.htm|

Obviously, even if all the other tattooes are fake, Wiesel,of all people, should still have one. Where is it? Even if they are all fake, why didn’t he ever bother to get one? It would probably cost him all of 25 bucks. A friend would do it for nothing. Where is it?

I am sure this is a lie as German do not write Number one that way. About the other number are alright but not number one the way Americans write it.

    On January 12, 2012 at 9:53 am

    Anna,

Are you “sure” that the camp tattoo-ers would be adding flourishes or extra lines to the numbers? Maybe they were instructed to write the 1’s that way to keep it simple and easy to read. If I were in charge of it, that’s what I would do. The tattoo of the man Rosenzweig has a similar straight vertical line for the number one. His tattoo is accepted as authentic by the Jewish United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the top Holocaust authority in the U.S. :-) What else can we go by when it comes to such matters? :-))

There is no way to know for sure where anyone’s alleged “Auschwitz tattoo” came from, except for those who had their arm photographed while still interned or immediately upon liberation. But your idea that the 1 would have to have the preceding upswing line is not convincing. It wouldn’t.

If you open one of Marcel’s testimony you will see the two children are Marcel and Jehuda. I don’t know if Jehuda survived, however I assumed that Marcel Stein would have submitted a page of testimony for his brother in that scenario.

If you can not find Jehuda Stein’s name on the deportation list then he probably survived or at least was not directly killed by the Germans. Avraham Feig submitted a page of testimony for a “Arie Stein” that he said was the son of his sister Reizl. I can’t see an Arie Stein on the Belgium deportation list either.

    On January 12, 2012 at 10:10 am

    Grey,
You are correct. I didn’t notice that; was just looking for the basic information. We have to assume both sons survived … maybe the parents too? All we have officially is that the parents were deported. No official death reports, and the testimony pages give no dates for death so that means there is no official record.

I don’t know how to get Arie from Marcel or Jehuda, but anything is possible from these people. I would say Avraham may not have known where one of the sons was … and may not have even known their proper names since they were born in Antwerp (far away), and so made out a report for Yad Vashem on that basis. Everything to do with these testimonies is speculation; they do not constitute any kind of proof. However, we know that Asher and Riezl Stein existed, and a son Marcel survived. As you point out, we would like to know if they are in the Yiddish book, “And the world remained silent.”

On page 21 of Grüner’s book Stolen Identity, we read:

After the third day (at Auschwitz)… we were made to line up to be tattooed on our lower left arm with a writing pen that was plunged into black ink. The ink infected my arm and it took me fourteen days to recover…

The clip of Grüner showing his arm appears to show a genuine tattoo, not something that resulted from a pen and ink over 60 years ago.

Has Grüner merely omitted to write of the painstaking step of actually piercing the skin, in order to tattoo properly? Or does the Tattoo legend have a more logical origin?

  16. by Carolyn

    On January 12, 2012 at 10:40 am

Chris, even with all you say about Grüner, which is admittedly contradictory and raises questions, Elie Wiesel has said on two documented occasions (one under oath on a witness stand) — occasions within the last 5 years — that he has a visible tattoo A-7713 on his left arm. This is the point. I ask everyone who’s commenting in the form of questioning the authenticity of Auschwitz tattoos in general, to answer why Elie Wiesel doesn’t just say “there were no tattoos at all.” Why all this nonsense? This is not something to be overlooked or explained away, unless you’re an anti-revisionist … in my opinion.

I think some of the comments, and questions in them are good. What no one seems to have heard of is the Persian Corridor (it was a smuggling route) it started in Europe and ended in Palestine. Looking into this may answer some of the questions, especially those on the topic of those who seemed to have disappeared.

This is a little known bit of history that will never be taught in any school, as it causes great conflict with the “original holocaust” story(ies). What most people don’t know is that many Jews were smuggled from Europe to Palestine in order to begin the “terrorism, and attacks” that would lead to the later state of Israel.

It is also little known that there was no intentional starvation at the camps. The starvation came later when allied bombers destroyed the railroads that were used to transport not just military supplies, gasoline and diesel but food as well.

Awesome work by the way Miss Carolyn.

Firstly, WWII fascinates me greatly, now to the point.
I’m studying the novel ‘Night’ in my year 11 English class at the moment. I feel as though reading these blogs… and trying to comprehend what I have just digested is hard to swallow. It’s the same old argument of “the existence of god” meaning that trying to convince someone once their minds are made up is an extremely hard, almost impossible thing to do. Sometimes in life Ignorance is bliss and at the moment I wish I had never stumbled upon this blog. That is all, carry on with your shenanigans.

    On February 27, 2012 at 10:10 am

    Racquel,

Do you not find it odd to be assigned a purely “Holocaust Survivor” story book in your 11th grade English class? Are you told that this is important literature? Has “Holocaust” now been added as a genre of its own in literature classification? Why not ask your teacher why Elie Wiesel does not have a tattoo even though he says he does. Your teacher will not know anything about it. As you say, Ignorance is bliss for most people.

Is Night presented in your classroom as a novel? I’m interested to know which translation you have been given to read — the original Stella Rodway translation or the new 2006 Marion Wiesel translation? Please read my latest research in the current featured article: “What Changes Were Made in Night #2 – and Why?” You will see that your education is dependent on the current “powers that be” to give you a particular view of history, not necessarily the correct one.

Thanks for writing. Hope to hear back from you.

P.S. Another point to make to your English teacher: Night was originally written in Yiddish, translated into French, then into English. So it is not an “English classic” in any way, shape or form. What’s it doing being read in English class?

    Carolyn,

Just because something was translated from another language into English does not mean it shouldn’t be taught in an English class. It’s a literature class. Night is literature, whether you like it or not.

  23. by Carolyn

    On March 6, 2012 at 4:58 pm

Are you an English teacher or professor? In an English class, during the section on literature, it is customary to read classics of the English language. The English language Night was actually translated from French; it was written in French, based on, or copied from, the Yiddish Un di velt hot geshvign. It is not an exampble of English literature. However, in these days, in the schools we have now under the control of Jewish political power, all rules of the past are being broken in obeisance to holocaustianity. But don’t think it’s not noticed.

By the way, I love how you say that “inappropriate or irrelevant comments will be removed” from this blog, yet comment # 10, obviously irrelevant, stays on your page. I don’t think “yanks” have anything to do with the point your’e trying to make about Elie Wiesel. Just another reason why this blog, although intensely researched, is not a serious one.

    On March 6, 2012 at 5:05 pm

Comment #10 is from waffenss. I think he is implying he is German, or identifies as such, and the Americans (Yanks) don’t “get it” because in this country Wiesel is made into a hero. Did Elie Wiesel ever do anything for the United States of America? I don’t think so. But he makes a lot of money here.

So I see nothing inappropriate or irrelevent. But rest assured I reject comments on both sides of the issue that really are inappropriate.

I am an English (sometimes called Language Arts, but they are the same) teacher, a subject which EVERYONE knows includes world literature. I laughed out loud over your questioning why we would teach literature that was not originally written in English. With all due respect, that is absolutely ridiculous! By your reasoning, then, we should never teach Greek mythology, biographies and autobiographies of the great people who shaped the world, various forms of poetry, and volumes of literature that defined every single literary genre – not to mention the development of the English language – long before the English language even existed. What an ignorant, narcissistic (an English word that comes from Greek mythology, by the way) and culturally illiterate generation we would create by your reasoning. By the way, I teach “Night” as an autobiographical novel. Nearly all of my students were raised in some denomination of Christianity. I was shocked that almost none of them knew that Jesus was a Jew (a religion) and that He most certainly was NOT WHITE (a race.) They also didn’t realize that our Old Testament IS the Hebrew Bible. And you want us to narrow their world views ever more than they already are? No, thank you!

tattoos where put in numerous places on the left forearm; inner and outer placement and even initially on the chest – so your comment about not seeing tattoo in the photo shown is of no value…

  28. by Carolyn

    On April 7, 2013 at 5:11 am

sandra – Do you think all people are stupid? You do not know where tattoos were placed because, really, no one is able to speak about it with any knowledge. What we do know is that Auschwitz-Birkenau is the only camp where inmates were tattooed. No one has ever claimed to have been tattooed in another camp. We also have still pictures of Elie Wiesel’s left forearm from all angles — no tattoo. They are from Elie Wiesel’s own film “Elie Wiesel Goes Home” which is available for purchase. All this is covered in “Where is Elie’s Tattoo?” I’m sure you have read it, right?

In addition to that, AP (Associated Press) Reporter Verena Dobnik stated in an interview with Wiesel, that was published in numerous newspapers around the country, that Elie Wiesel pushed back his sleeve to reveal to her his tattoo. So it was that easy to see. Of course she was lying but Wiesel has not corrected her. Nor did the AP print a retraction even though I and several others called and wrote to them repeatedly that we wanted some further proof for this irresponsible statement from Dobnik.

So where does that leave you with your silly comment? Do you dare to respond to me? I welcome you to do so with something intelligent.

Could you imagine the fraud that is so prevalent in the holocaust community? I can bring up the holodomor and people would say huh? And yet at least 3 times as many human beings were horribly starved to death by joe Stalin. I can bring up the killing fields and most would say pol who? When I bring up WWII all anyone associates regarding that war is the poor Jews and these people are collecting handouts to this day. What about the 26 million Russians and millions of others that were raped and murdered during the war? The countless Germans and Americans let alone the Japanese, British and French, Polish and Italians. This whole supposed holocaust somehow is supposed to be more relevant because Jewish people died? I find it sickening that even in their death Jewish people feel they are more important than the goyim. Aren’t we all human beings with hopes and dreams. Aren’t all of us as valuable and made with flesh and blood and feelings just like Jewish people? If we are so enamored by genocide that we have to teach our children about it in English class then history has much more severe cases of genocide than the Jews that died in the war and the thing I often wonder about is how so many Jewish people survived if the nazi’s really wanted to kill them all. Elie weisel is a fraud. No doubt about it. Where is the tattoo?
